Punishments That May Work
Judge Michael Cicconetti here in Northeast Ohio that is known for imposing somewhat strange sentences. The latest one involves a drunk driver that is sentenced to not only jail time and the local “drunk school”, but he has to go look at the bodies of people killed in car crashes. Does this seem harsh? I don’t think so. If you are going to do something like that then you should know what the consequences may be for others. It’s a little thing called empathy. If people actually stop and think of how their actions will affect others then maybe some people won’t so stupid things. I know that this won’t work on everyone. You have to be basically a decent person and capable of making “the right” decision when needed. Maybe for this guy that brief recollection of a dead body may stop him from the drinking/driving combo again. Or he’ll just be too drunk next time to care and actually kill someone. Kind of hard to say isn’t it?
